Artist Rendering of UFO Sighting
Setting the Stage
It was the summer of 1975. My mother, a family friend (I will call her “Kathy”), and myself drove to a Tupperware party out in the country in Jupiter, Florida. As in most of these cases, it was a secluded area away from traffic and housing.
The party was a fiasco. Everyone seemed on edge, very uncomfortable. Even the farm animals were behaving strangely: the horses were “spooked” and the dogs were barking incessantly.
We weren’t at the party for long, due to the restless discomfort everyone was feeling.
The Sighting
On the trip home, I was the first noticed two huge red lights over a field to the left of us. They were perpendicular to each other and softly floating in the sky. It took me a while to get my mother’s attention, but then she saw them too. Kathy then stopped the car on the abandoned road.
The lights then became horizontal, and we could see that they were attached to a cigar-like shape. The object was completely silent, but we could hear the animals in the woods acting up. The object then came to a stop over the road. It was at treetop level and large; it covered the road completely, and if we were to move forward, we would have driven right underneath it.
No one kept track of time, but the incident had to have lasted at least five minutes. My mother and Kathy opened the car doors to take a closer look. I remained seated in the backseat.
Finally, a car came from the opposite direction. It stopped suddenly when the driver spotted the object over the road. Once he was on the scene, the object then slowly and silently drifted away to our right and finally disappeared beyond the trees.
There was some discussion with the driver of the other car and my mother and Kathy as to whether or not to report the sighting. Since people were often being ridiculed at the time, and we didn’t have any hard evidence of the “craft,” everyone decided to keep quiet about it, except to understanding friends and relatives.
Aftermath
There is more to the story than I’m willing to tell at this point. The sighting was only the beginning of a series of strange events to fall on my family during this period.
I do not know what to make of it all. I still decline to assume it was “alien” in the traditional sense but almost like a modern day mystical experience. Further incidents, to me, back up this theory.
As I have said before, I didn’t become interested in UFOs until they became interested in me first.
